ME-UY 3211: Mechanics of Materials Laboratory

Course Goals: The course covers measurement of elastic constants for isotropic materials, verification of stress and strain transformation equations, stress concentration concept, unsymmetrical bending of beams and buckling. ME-UY 3213 (Mechanics of Materials) is a co-requisite.

  • Laboratory 1: Redundant truss
  • Laboratory 2: Bending stress in a beam
  • Laboratory 3: Unsymmetrical bending and shear centre
  • Laboratory 4 Buckling of struts

Course Evaluations:

Spring 2022 – 11 Students – 4.5/5.0

– The work provided and support shown were good. Mainly adjustments to the equipment being used are welcome.

– Mert made this an educational and enjoyable laboratory experience.

– Amazing instructor.

Fall 2021 Section A – 35 Students – 4.5/5.0

– Mert is a great instructor. Each experiment was set up well and he explained theory clearly, answering any questions we had while conducting the experiment. Criteria for reports was straight forward and Mert was always available to meet  and discuss questions about the reports. Reports were all graded in a timely fashion.

– Having Mert as a TA was great. I wish that feedback for the labs could have been returned in a more timely manner. Other than that, the course was stimulating intellectually. He made sure we always understood the lab procedures and engineering concepts. The labs were graded fairly and based on the given guidelines.

– Mert was very nice and helpful.

Fall 2021 Section B – 36 Students – 4.5/5.0

– Mert was excellent. He’s fair in his grading and responds thoroughly to any questions that we may have. His explanations are clear for both theoretical information and experimental procedure. Overall fantastic!

– This evaluation is about the TA (Mert); he was extremely helpful and fair, and flexibly made adjustments to accommodate for students’ situations. It was clearly seen that he was trying to treat everyone with respect, and was always willing to help whenever needed.

– This lab helped me understand a lot of the concepts in a way more rooted in reality.

– The Instructor for this course was very knowledgeable and always willing to explain and further explore topics and questions students had. The professor was also very understanding when it comes to deadlines.

Fall 2021 Section C – 13 Students – 4.5/5.0

– The instructor was concise, and answered questions with clarity.

– The instructor was very helpful.

– Great!

Spring 2020 – 20 Students – 4.2/5.0

Fall 2019 Section A – 28 Students – 4.2/5.0

– The Lab TA was very helpful when it came to questions concerning the lab.

– Knowledgeable in the material and good at communicating what needed to be done for each lab.

– Our TA was really good with explaining and assisting with confusing lab procedures.

Fall 2019 Section B – 16 Students – 4.2/5.0

– Mert was a great instructor, he was kind and willing to help us when we were confused.

– Very good explanations of the theory in each lab. Thoroughly enjoyed this lab.

– Mert shows thorough understanding of all material and provided help throughout every lab. He is an excellent TA but the course itself could use work and the equipment must be updated.

– The instructor showed a good understanding of a difficult subject and conveyed all the important information that we needed.
