Professional quantitative researcher with four years of experience

Mert Karakaya was born on April 11, 1994 in Izmir, Turkey. He is the son of Hakan and Esra, and the older brother to Ceylin. Mert obtained his Bachelor of Science diploma in Mechanical Engineering from the Purdue University in December 2016. He then earned a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from New York University Tandon School of Engineering in December 2018. Since January 2019, Mert has been a Ph.D. student in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at New York University Tandon School of Engineering. He passed the Ph.D. qualifying exam in February 2020 and the Ph.D. proposal defense in January 2021. Throughout his tenure, Mert worked as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Dynamical Systems Laboratory under the supervision of Institute Professor Maurizio Porfiri, as well as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. His work was supported by the National Science Foundation grants CMMI-1433670 and CMMI-1901697, the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse under grant number 1R21DA042558-01A1 and by the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research that co-funded the National Institute on Drug Abuse grant, and NYU School of Engineering fellowships. His research interests include fluid-structure interactions, robotics, animal behavior, information theory, and dynamical systems.
